Long Time Coming
After the Raiders lost to New England in the 1985 AFC Divisional Playoff game, Raider fans were expecting a quick return to the playoffs, since they had a lot of talent and Al Davis' teams had a track record of being consistent playoff participants. Well, surprisingly, the L.A. Raider faithful had to wait 5 seasons to see their beloved Raiders take command of the AFC West and return to the playoffs.
The month of September was kind to the Raiders as the Raiders started strong with wins over Denver, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. After falling to the Bills in a nationally televised Sunday night contest, the Raiders would win over division rivals San Diego and Seattle. The bye week came at a bad time for the Raiders as they lost the momentum they had built early in the season. The Raiders would lose back-to-back games against Kansas City and Green Bay. The Raiders were now 6-3 going into a Monday Night showdown with Miami. Bo Jackson would return to join the Silver and Black attack after the baseball season ended and he helped lead the Raiders to a hard fought 13-10 victory over the Dolphins. Bruised and battered after their tussle with Miami, the Raiders would return to action 6 days later and lose a 9-7 defensive struggle with rival Kansas City. The Raiders ended the regular season as they opened it, with a winning streak. L.A. would win all 5 December contests as they laid waste to Denver, Detroit, Cincinnati, Minnesota, and San Diego.
Quarterback Jay Schroeder enjoyed his best season since 1986 as he threw for 2,849 yards and 19 TD's and 8 ints. His 90.8 passer rating was 6th in the NFL. Bo Jackson led the Raiders in rushing in spite of the fact he only played 9 games as he ran for 698 yards and averaged an amazing 5.6 yards per rush. Marcus Allen gained 612 yards and had 13 total TD's to lead the team. Willie Gault enjoyed his best season as he caught 50 balls and had 19.7 yards per reception. His 985 yards led the squad. Mervyn Fernandez was Schroeder's leading pass target as he caught 52 balls for 839 yards and 5 TD's. Tim Brown overcame injuries in his first two seasons to return punts for an 8.5 yard average and catch 18 passes for 3 scores as the team's number 3 wideout.
In his 8th season, Howie Long was still the stalwart of the Silver and Black defensive unit. He registered 6 sacks, but his presence enabled ends Greg Townsend and Scott Davis to tally 12.5 and 10 sacks respectively. First round pick Aaron Wallace registered 9 sacks as a pass rush specialist off the bench. Middle linebacker Riki Ellison arrived from across the bay and gave the Raiders a presence in the middle. He was flanked by veterans Jerry Robinson and Thomas Benson. Terry McDaniel established himself as a 2nd-year cornerback with 3 interceptions and 2 sacks. Lionel Washington was the team's top cover corner. The Raiders also had excellent contributions from their starting safeties, Mike Harden in his final NFL campaign and Eddie Anderson. Each player picked off 3 passes.
The Raiders played very well in their opening playoff contest against the Bengals. For the second time in 5 weeks, the Raider defense held Boomer Esiason's no huddle offense in check and the offense provided enough firepower to win 20-10. The win came at price, however, as Bo Jackson suffered a career ending hip injury. Without Bo, the Raiders fell apart in Buffalo the next week as the Bills blitzed Los Angeles 51-3.

1990 AFC WEST STANDINGS
1st Place – L.A. Raiders (12-4)

4th Place – San Diego (6-10)
5th Place – Denver (5-11)
Defensive tackle Howie Long rushes Buffalo's Jim Kelly into making a hurried throw. He was double-teamed often by enemy offensive lines allowing other players like Scott Davis and Greg Townsend to shine around him.
Halfback Bo Jackson led the Raiders in rushing, despite of playing only half of what would be his final season of football. His career was cut short when he broke his hip against the Bengals in the AFC Div. Playoff game.
Future Hall of Famer Marcus Allen finished second on the Raiders in rushing with a shade over 500 yards. He fell out of favor with owner Al Davis over his lack of playing time and would only play sparingly over the next couple of seasons.
Mervyn Fernandez catches one of his five touchdown passes in between Steve Atwater and Wymon Henderson of Denver.
