Steel Curtain With A Twist
The Steelers in 1995 were coming off a disappointing home loss to the Chargers in the AFC Championship Game and were seeking a second chance to get to the Super Bowl. The regular season started brightly with two straight wins - the first came at home 23-20 against the Lions and the second coming at Houston by a score of 34-17. The Steelers fell flat the next two weeks with losses at Miami and at home against Minnesota. The Steelers had a chance to pay the Chargers back for that AFC Championship loss the following Sunday and the Steelers were able to exact revenge on the Chargers by a score of 31-16. The Steelers record dropped to 3-4 after another two game losing skid as the were upset in Jacksonville by the expansion Jaguars, 20-16 along with a home loss to Cincinnati, 27-9. With the Steelers in the bit of a tailspin, head coach Bill Cowher and offensive coordinator decided to open up the offense and help the struggling running game by using 5 wide receivers sets to spread out the opposing defenses and it worked! The Steelers had eight straight games including payback victories against Jacksonville and Cincinnati, two wins against the Browns, a win at home against New England, and a home win vs. Houston nd a road win at Oakland. The Steelers had already clinched the division and AFC regular season championships before losing their season finale at Green Bay.
Quarterback Neil O'Donnell led the offense and did an effective job with 2,970 passing yards, 17 TD passes, and 7 interceptions. Newcomer Erric Pegram replaced the departed Barry Foster and rushed for 813 yards and 5 touchdowns, while backup halfback Bam Morris rushed for a team leading 9 touchdowns and added 559 yards. Wide receiver Yancey Thigpen earned a trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl after leading the Steelers in receptions with 85 and receiving yards with 1,307 in 1995. Ernie Mills' 9 TD catches led the Steelers. His 679 receiving yards were good for 2nd on the team and his 36 receptions were third. Andre Hastings had 47 catches for 502 yards in '95 and rookie Charles Johnson added 38 catches for 432 yards. In spite of the productivity of all of those aforementioned players, rookie Kordell "Slash" Stewart garnered most of the attention for his ability to line up at wide receiver and quarterback on short yardage situations. He carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and a score and caught 14 passes for 235 yards with a 71-yard TD reception thrown in. Fullback John L. Williams made headlines in Seattle as a pass receiver, but has been more of a blocker in Pittsburgh and has been effective. The tight ends, Mark Bruener and Jonathan Hayes, also did not touch the ball much but were valuable for their blocking skills. Bruener had 26 receptions and Hayes caught 11 balls in '95. Center Dermontti Dawson earned his fourth consecutive trip to the Pro Bowl, while tackles Leon Searcy and Justin Strcelczyk were valuable contributors. Guard Brenden Stai made a fine contribution while Tom Newberry had a good final NFL campaign in 1995.
The Steelers boasted the AFC's finest defensive unit in 1995. Nose tackle Joel Steed did a great job clogging the middle on run plays and allowed the linebackers to shine as outside linebackers Greg Lloyd and Kevin Greene made the Pro Bowl. Greene led the Steelers in sacks with 9 while Lloyd added 6.5, while leading the Steelers in tackles with 86. Inside linebackers Chad Brown and Levon Kirkland were both adept in stopping the run. Defensive end Ray Seals finished second on the Steelers with 8.5 sacks while fellow ends Kevin Henry and Brentson Buckner added quality depth. Perennial Pro Bowler Rod Woodson was sidelined for much of the regular season resulting in safety Carnell Lake moving to cornerback. Woodson still got voted into the Pro Bowl and Lake still played at a Pro Bowl level inspite of the adjustment to play corner. He had made such a great transition that he remained at cornerback when Woodson returned to the lineup. Myron Bell took over at free safety for Lake and picked off a pair of passes, while strong safety Darren Perry picked off 4 passes. Cornerback Willie Williams picked off a team high 7 passes as a first-time starter in the secondary. Kicker Norm Johnson led the NFL with 34 FG's and made all 39 extra point attempts.
The Steelers playoff run started with a home game in the Divisional Playoff Round against Buffalo and the Steelers dominated from the start in the 40-21 win. The Steelers entered the AFC Title Game as 11 point favorites against the Wildcard Colts who beat K.C. and San Diego on the road to start the playoffs. The Steelers took a 13-6 halftime lead on the strength of a 5-yard Kordell Stewart TD catch. the Colts provided an even grater challenge in the second half as the teams traded field goals before the Colts' Jim Harbaugh hooked up with Floyd Turner on a 47-yard TD pass with 3:04 left to play to put Indy up 16-13. The Steelers returned the ensuing kickoff to their 33-yard line and they would march 67 yards on a drive culminated with a 1-yard Bam Morris touchdown run to put the Steelers up 20-16 with 1:34 remaining. The Colts drove all the way to the Steelers' 29-yard line with time to run just one more play. The game would end on a Jim Harbaugh Hail Mary pass that fell through the fingers of a diving Aaron Bailey and fell to the turf as an incomplete pass to give the Steelers a 20-16 victory which advanced the Steelers to Super Bowl XXX.
The Super Bowl contest pitted the Steelers against the NFC Champion Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys scored on their first three possessions to give them a 13-0 lead to start the game. The Steelers would get on the board just before halftime as Yancey Thigpen caught a 6 yard touchdown pass from Neil O'Donnell with 13 sec. left in the first half to put the Steelers within 6. Midway through the third quarter, the Steelers had the ball at midfield, but Neil O'Donnell's pass was picked off by Larry Brown, who returned the interception to the Pittsburgh 18 yard-line. Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin hooked up on a 17 yard pass play to get to the 1-yard line and Emmitt Smith took a run into the end zone on the next play to give Dallas a 20-7 lead. The Steelers would respond with a 46-yard Norm Johnson field goal followed by successful onsides kick that the Steelers recovered. The drive would conclude with a Bam Morris 1-yard TD run with 6:36 to play in regulation to trim Dallas' lead to 20-17. With 4:15 to play, the Steelers got the ball back at their 32-yard line. On second down, O'Donnell was picked off for a second time by Larry Brown at the Steelers 39 and returned it to the Steelers' 33 yard line. Two plays later, Emmitt Smith scored on a 4-yard TD run to put Dallas up 27-17. The Steelers could not respond this time and they would fall 10 points short of a World Championship.

Cornerback Rod Woodson led a potent Steelers secondary, which also boasted top flite players such as Carnell Lake, Darren Perry, and Willie Williams. Woodson was a perennial member of the AFC Pro Bowl squad and 1995 was no exception.
Carnell Lake was moved from his natural Strong Safety position to Cornerback while Rod Woodson was out of the lineup and did not miss a beat. He delivers a shot to Green Bay's Edgar Bennett.
