1991 Denver Broncos
1991 AFC Western Division Champions!
Back On Top
The 1991 season was one of questions for the Broncos following a last place 5-11 record the previous year. Their leading rusher the previous two seasons, Bobby Humphrey held out into the start of the regular season. The offensive line was mediocre at best and their defense had not been a great unit at any point during the Dan Reeves era and there wasn't much indication that marked improvement would occur on the defensive side of the ball.
The Broncos took full advantage of their fifth place schedule as they won all four contests against teams that finished fifth in their division in 1990. They beat New England 9-6 in Foxboro and 20-3 at Mile High, at Minnesota 13-6, and Phoenix by a score of 24-19 at Mile High. The Broncos finished 5-3 against their divisional foes including a season sweep of playoff bound Kansas City. They lost both matchups, however, to the playoff bound L.A. Raiders. They swept San Diego and the home team won each game in their season split with Seattle. Their most difficult matchup outside of divisional play was a contest against the Oilers in the Astrodome and the Broncos got bombed by a score of 45-14. In the remaining matchups, the Broncos defeated Cincinnati 45-14 and Pittsburgh 20-13 at home and Cleveland 17-7 in the Dawg Pound. The Broncos won their last four contests and 5 of their last 6 going into the playoffs and they had won the fourth division title in the last six seasons. The Broncos were the second seeded AFC team entering the playoffs and earned a bye in the Wildcard round as a result.
The defensive prowess of the Broncos was a pleasant surprise as the 3-4 unit led the AFC in points allowed (235), touchdowns allowed (20), TD passes allowed (12), sacks (52), interceptions (23), first downs allowed (242), rushing first downs allowed (81), passing first downs allowed (147), pass defense (2,755 yds.), third down conversion % (31.1), and passer rating (60.6). The defense allowed 1 touchdown or less in 10 of the 16 games and allowed 10 points or less 5 times. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips established a team concept on defense, which the players bought into as 10 different players had at least one sack and 6 different players had at least one pick. Inside linebacker Michael Brooks led the Broncos in tackles with 153 (96 solos) and free safety Steve Atwater finished second with 150 (83 solos) and tied Dennis Smith for the team lead in interceptions with 5. Outside linebacker Simon Fletcher registered at least one sack in 10 straight games and finished with 13.5 on the season to lead the team. Outside linebacker Mike Croel made a splash as a rookie with 10 sacks. 33 year-old strong safety Dennis Smith was the leader of the defense and was voted team defensive MVP. He along with Atwater and inside linebacker Karl Mecklenburg were chosen to represent the AFC in the Pro Bowl.
The offense, once the top unit in the AFC was a middle of the road unit in 1991, but they still had some top notch performances. Quarterback John Elway is such a talent at quarterback that statistics just don't do him justice. He passed for 3,253 yards and he ran for 258 and 6 TD's. He is a gamer who will do anything to win as evidenced by his game winning drive against Houston in the playoffs. Halfback Gaston Green emerged as the feature back in the wake of Humphrey's holdout and he led the Broncos with 1,037 yards rushing and went to the Pro Bowl. Rookie Greg Lewis rushed for 376 yards, while Humphrey remained on the bench the whole season. Wide receiver Michael Young emerged to lead the team with 44 catches and 629 receiving yards. Mark Jackson added 33 for 436 and Vance Johnson came on late in the season to catch 21 for 317 yards. Rookie Derek Russell caught 21 passes for 317 yards and Ricky Nattiel faded off the map in 1991. Shannon Sharpe lined up as an H-back, tight end, and wide receiver and he had a career high with 22 receptions. The Broncos O-line turned out to be effective, though not flashy. Center Keith Kartz, guards Sean Farrell and Doug Widell, and tackles Ken Lanier and Jeff Davidson comprised the unit.
The kicking game was solid with Mike Horan, who averaged 41.8 yards per punt and David Treadwell who was accurate inside of 50 yards and made 27 of his 36 FG attempts. The return game was hardly special as Vance Johnson averaged 7.3 yards on 24 punt returns and Alton Montgomery returned 26 kickoffs for an 18.8 yard average.
The playoffs for Denver would begin at the friendly confines of Mile High Stadium filled with 75,301 crazed fans as the Broncos tried to avenge the regular season loss to the Oilers in Houston. It looked bad for the host Broncos as Warren Moon led the Oilers to two touchdown drives with scoring passes to Haywood Jeffires and Drew Hill to lead Houston to a 14-0 advantage. Quarterback John Elway responded with a drive of his own culminated by a 10 yard TD pass to Vance Johnson to draw the Broncos within 8 as David Treadwell botched the extra point attempt. A Moon to Curtis Duncan 6-yard TD strike widened the gap to 21-6. Just before halftime, Greg Lewis scored from a yard out for Denver to close the gap to 8 at 21-13. After a 25 yard Al Del Greco fourth quarter field goal, Elway led the Broncos on an 80 yard march culminated by another Lewis 1 yard run for a TD to get the Broncos within a point at 24-23. With 2:07 remaining in the contest, Elway and the Broncos offense would start a drive from their own 2-yard line conjuring up memories of The Drive in Cleveland five years previous, which also started from the 2. The Broncos faced fourth down twice during this final drive. Both times the Broncos went for it and were successful. On fourth and 6 from the Denver 28, Elway rushed for 7 yards and facing a fourth and 10, he completed a 44-yard pass to Vance Johnson. This would set up David Treadwell for a 28 yard FG attempt. The kick was good and the Broncos would advance to play in Buffalo for the AFC Championship. The AFC title game looked like it would be Jim Kelly and John Elway matching wits in an AFL style shootout. Well, it was far from reality as both teams would struggle to generate offense on this 34 degree day in Orchard Park, NY. Kicker David Treadwell missed three FG attempts with 2 hitting the upright and one sailing wide right to keep the game scoreless into the third quarter. Toward the end of the quarter on a 3rd and 10 play, John Elway threw a screen pass that Buffalo's Carlton Bailey jumped in the middle of. He would intercept the pass and return it 11 yards to put Buffalo ahead 7-0. Elway would then suffer a deep thigh bruise and had to leave the game in favor of Gary Kubiak. With just 4:18 left, Scott Norwood made a 44 yard field goal to put Buffalo up 10-0. Kubiak would score on a 3 yard TD run with 1:43 remaining to close the gap to 3. Denver then tried an onside kick and recovered keeping Denver's hopes alive. Buffalo's Kirby Jackson would burst Denver's bubble with a hit on Steve Sewell which knocked the ball loose and Jackson recovered the fumble and effectively ended the Broncos hopes for a return trip to the Super Bowl.
