Beasts of the NFC East Part III
Following the Super Bowl victory in 1993, owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jimmy Johnson were unable to see eye-to-eye on personnel issues prompting Jones to encourage Johnson to resign as coach, which he did. Former University of Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer assumed the reins of America's Team and was given the task of getting this team to the Super Bowl and winning for the third straight year - a feat that had never been done before.
In addition to the change at the top, offensive coordinator Norv Turner became the head coach of the Washington Redskins and was replaced by Ernie Zampese, Pro Bowl linebacker Ken Norton, Jr. signed with the rival 49ers as a free agent, and Pro Bowl safety Thomas Everett signed with Tampa Bay prior to the start of the 1994 season.
The Cowboys started 1994 with two consecutive victories out of the gate: a 26-9 victory in Pittsburgh followed by a 20-17 home win over Houston. The following Monday night featured a game at home against the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys sported their jerseys from their inaugural season - 1960. Unfortunately for the host Cowboys, the result was similar to many of their 1960 contests - a 20-17 overtime loss. The Cowboys rebouned strongly with 6 straight wins, 5 of those wins coming against divisional foes. The Cowboys stood at 8-1 going into their toughest matchup on paper of the regular season, a trip to Candlestick Park in San Francsco against a 49er team they defeated in the last 2 NFC Championship Games. The battle lived up to expectations, but the Cowboys lost to the 49ers for the first time in the 1990's by a score of 21-14. The Cowboys responded to that loss with a dominating 31-7 victory over the rival Redskins at home. Troy Aikman got hurt in the contest prompting third string QB Jason Garrett to make his starting debut against Green Bay on Thanksgiving. Garrett's Thanksgiving Day performance reminded long-time Cowboy fans of Clint Longley's Thanksgiving performance two decades earlier. Garrett threw for 315 yards, 2 TD's and 1 pick in the 42-31 victory over the Packers. Backup QB Rodney Peete returned from injury to start in Philadelphia against the Eagles the following week and the Cowboys prevailed 31-19. The Cowboys returned home the following week only to lose 19-14 to Cleveland. The Cowboys had alread clinched the division before their visit to New Orleans on a Monday night and the Cowboys won 24-16. The Cowboys had already clinched the NFC's #2 seed prior to their final regular season game against the Giants and the Cowboys fell in Giants Stadium by a score of 15-10 and the Cowboys ended the regular season with a 12-4 and a first-round playoff bye.
The Cowboys' playoff run started when the Packers traveled to Dallas for a rematch of their Thanksgiving Day clash. The Cowboys sent the Packers packing with a 35-9 blowout win. Troy Aikman completed 23 of 30 passes for 337 yards, 2 TD's and 1 pick. Michael Irvin caught 6 passes for 111 yards and Jay Novacek caught 11 passes for 104 yards in the game. Blair Thomas replaced an injured Emmitt Smith early in the contest and gained 70 yards on 23 carries and scored 2 rushing TD's. The Cowboy triumph meant they had to travel to Candlestick with a third straight trip to the Super Bowl on the line. The NFC Championship game was a blowout early as Eric Davis picked off a Troy Aikman pass and returned it for a 44-yard touchdown, Steve Young and Ricky Watters hooked up for a 29-yard TD pass, and William Floyd scored on a 1-yard plunge to put the Niners up 21-0 in the first quarter. Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin hooked up for a 44-yard TD pass and catch with 2:14 left in the opening stanza to put the Cowboys within 14. The Cowboys were able to outscore the 49ers 21-17 the rest of the way, but the damage was done and the 49ers ended the Cowboys hopes of a three-peat with a 38-28 victory.
