Building A Foundation
After a disappointing 1991 campaign, head coach Lindy Infante was fired and replaced by 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren, who hired a young coaching staff - a majority of which would become NFL head coaches such as Ray Rhodes, Steve Mariucci, Jon Gruden, Andy Reid, and Dick Jauron. The Packers had a productive draft with the most significant move being the acquisition of Atlanta third string QB Brett Favre for a second round pick, which Atlanta used to take halfback Tony Smith. Both moves gave the Packers a couple of the major pieces in their Super Bowl championship team four season later.
Holmgren's Green Bay career started with an OT loss at home to the Vikings and a 31-3 shallacking at Tampa. Holmgren's first win came against the Bengals at home the following Sunday with Brett Favre taking over at quarterback for an injured Don Majkowski followed by a 17-3 triumph over playoff bound Pittsburgh. A loss in Atlanta the following week left the Packers 2-3 heading into their bye week. The Packers would lose two straight following the bye in Cleveland and at home against the rival Bears. The month of October began with a 27-13 win at the Silverdome against the Lions. A 27-7 loss to the Giants the following Sunday dropped the Packers to 3-6 and little was expected for the rest of the year with young Brett Favre at quarterback. The Packers upset NFL heavyweight Philadelphia 27-24 at home and it would represent the start of a 6-game win streak. The Packers beat Tampa Bay by 5, Detroit by 28, Houston by 2 in the Astrodome, and the Rams by 15 during the streak. The Packers were eliminated from playoff contention the final week of the regular season with a 27-7 loss to playoff bound Minnesota.
Quarterback Brett Favre was selected to the Pro Bowl after throwing for 3,227 yards and 18 TD's while finishing fifth in he NFC in passer rating. Favre's top target was unquestionably Sterling Sharpe. The fifth-year wide receiver made the Pro Bowl following a then NFL record 108 receptions for an NFL high 1,461 yards and 13 TD's. Finding a complement to him has still been a problem as Sanjay Beach was the second leading wideout with 17 catches. Wide receiver Ron Lewis started the final five games and had 13 catches. Jackie Harris finished second in the NFL among tight ends with 55 receptions which went for 595 yards and 2 scores. The running game suffered as starting halfback Darrell Thompson missed nine games and ran for 254 yards, good for 3.3 yards per carry. Vince Workman replaced Thompson and ran for a team high 631 yards and had 4.0 yards per carry.
The Packers defensive line produced little pass rush as the unit spearheaded by ends Matt Brock and Robert Brown and nose tackle John Jurkovic combined for just 10 sacks. Outside linebacker Tony Bennett was a budding star as he led the team with 13.5 sacks, good for a sixth place tie in the NFC. Brian Noble once again led the Packers in tackles from his inside linebacker spot. Fellow ILB Johnny Holland is another fine tackler and George Koonce showed promise at outside linebacker as a rookie. First round pick Terrell Buckley showed flashes of brilliance as a starting cornerback with his coverage skills and he intercepted 3 passes. Roland Mitchell started at right cornerback and intercepted a pair of passes along with nickleback Vinnie Clark. Free safety Chuck Cecil was a ferocious hitter who led the team with picks. His efforts landed him in the Pro Bowl. Leroy Butler developed into a solid player at the strong safety spot.
Kicker Chris Jacke converted 22 of 29 field goals and made all 30 PAT attempts. Punter Paul McJulien's 38.5 gross average and 30.2 yard net average did not cut the mustard so he was released and replaced by Bryan Wagner who had 40.7 and 35.0 averages, respectively. Corey Harris finished 11th among NFC kickoff returners with a 20.9-yard average. Terrell Buckley was a home run threat returning punts and finished fifth in the NFC with a 10.0 average with a 58 yard touchdown thrown in.
