Joe Montana (pictured below) had another banner year throwing the football in 1990. He completed 61.7% of his passes for 3,944 yards and had an 89.0 passer rating.
Wide Receiver Jerry Rice continued to excel in 1990. He caught a league leading 100 passes for 1,502 yards and 13 TD's. He scored five of those TD's in this contest in Atlanta.

Three Peat Thwarted
With the two-time defending Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers returning most of their starters from 1989, many people expected this 49ers team to accomplish a feat no other team had done: win three consecutive Super Bowls.
After surviving a scare in the season opener in New Orleans in which they eked out a one-point win, the Niners would win their next nine contests to push their record to 10-0. With one game left on the schedule prior to their much anticipated clash with the similarly 10-0 Giants, they would have to knock off the Rams at home to remain undefeated. Hopes of an undefeated season were dashed when Cleveland Gary ran with great success again the 49er defense as the Rams prevailed 28-17. With the Giants also losing that day, the 49er matchup with the Giants would give the winner the upper hand in the NFC standings.
The Monday Night clash with New York was an epic defensive struggle won by the Niners by a score of 7 to 3. The win gave the Niners a one-game lead on the Giants for the NFC regular season title and the Niners would not relinquish that lead for the remainder of the season. The 49ers went 3 and 1 in their last 4 games with the lone defeat coming at home against the Saints. The 49ers finished the season 14-2 and owners of the NFL's best record heading into the postseason.
The 49ers hosted the NFC Divisional Playoff against the Washington Redskins with a dark backdrop: cloud-covered sky and muddy conditions. The 49ers did not mind the slower track as they prevailed 28-10 setting up another clash with the Giants - this time for the right to play in Super Bowl XXV. With the start of the Gulf War earlier in the week, some of the hype heading into the game was subdued but the game lived up to the hype and then some. Both defenses were successful in shutting down the opponents' offenses. The Niners held a slim 13-12 lead late in the 4th quarter. The tide turned when Joe Montana was sacked from his blind side by Leonard Marshall. Montana lost control of the ball and the fumble was recovered by the Giants. The Giants drove down to the San Francisco 25 yard line. As time expired, Matt Bahr's 42-yard field goal attempt was made and it was the Giants - and not the 49ers who would play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The 49ers accomplished much in 1990, but this season was most remembered for the Montana fumble and Bahr's game winning FG to prevent them from the unprecedented 3-peat.

Free Safety Ronnie Lott missed 5 games due to injury in 1990, but he still managed to pick off 3 passes and recover a fumble. Here, he is defending a pass in the Monday Night 7-3 win over the Giants.
Halfback Roger Craig struggled for much of 1990 as he managed just 3.1 yards/carry, but he shows off his patented high-knee action against the Packers.
