Charging To Uncharted Heights
Very little was expected in 1994 for the San Diego Chargers after missing the playoffs in 1993 and losing long-time cornerback Gill Byrd to retirement, star wide receiver Anthony Miller, and halfback Marion Butts in free agency during the offseason. People overlooked the fact that the Chargers still had solid players on their roster spearheaded by their All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau.
The Chargers opened some eyes on opening day as they knocked off highly favored Denver 37-34 in Mile High Stadium. Their winning ways continued the following Sunday with a win at home 27-10 over Cincinnati. The Chargers would win their next four contests: at Seattle, at the Raiders, Kansas City at home and at the Superdome in New Orleans to go to 6-0. Denver got their revenge on he Chargers in San Diego as they dealt the Chargers a 20-15 to knock them from the ranks of the undefeated. The Chargers rebounded with their second win over Seattle, 35-15. The Chargers' seesaw ways continued with a 10-9 loss to Atlanta in the Georgia Dome followed by a 14-13 triumph in K.C. The following Sunday, the Chargers visited Foxboro Stadium and lost 23-17 to the Patriots and the Chargers rebounded with a 31-17 home win over the Rams. The Chargers then suffered their first losing streak of the season with a 7 point loss at home against the Raiders and a 38-15 loss to the 49ers. The Chargers ended the season on a high with two straight wins against the Jets and Steelers.
The offense was led by quarterback Stan Humphries and he proved to be an effective game manager for the Chargers as he threw for 3,209 and 17 TD's against just 12 interceptions. Sophomore halfback Natrone Means enjoyed his first season in basically a full-time role and flourished in it with 1,350 yards rushing, 12 rushing TD's and his first Pro Bowl appearance. Third-down back Ronnie Harmon tied for the team lead in receptions with 58 for 615 yards and a score. He was the lone offensive player for San Diego who made it into the Pro Bowl. The wide receiving corps was overhauled with the losses of Anthony Miller and Nate Lewis in free agency. The top returning wideout was Shawn Jefferson and he caught 43 balls for 627 yards and 3 TD's. Newcomers Mark Seay and Tony Martin made their mark. Seay caught 58 passes for 645 yards and scored 6 TD's. Martin led the Chargers in receiving yards (885) and receiving TD's (7) and he caught 50 passes. The tight ends and H-backs were primarily used as blockers, but Alfred Pupunu did catch 21 passes for 2 TD's and Duane Young caught 17 passes for 217 yards and scored once. The Chargers offensive line was led by left tackle Harry Swayne and center Courtney Hall. Veteran right tackle Stan Brock came over from New Orleans and solidified the line.
The defensive line was very solid as the Chargers had the fifth best run defense in football. Reuben Davis and Shawn Lee were very good run stuffers and Lee added 6.5 sacks to boot. Leslie O'Neal led the Chargers with 12.5 sacks from his defensive end position and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl and the other bookend on the line, Chris Mims, added 11 sacks. All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau led the Chargers with 155 tackles, while newcomers David Griggs and Dennis Gibson were key additions to this defense. The Chargers boasted two fine and underrated safeties in free safety, Stanley Richard, who tied for the team lead with 4 interceptions and returned 2 for scores. Darren Carrington added 3 picks from his strong safety spot. Dwayne Harper came over from Seattle in the offseason and was a fine replacement for Gill Byrd. Darrien Gordon was the other starter at corner and he had flashes of brilliance as he picked off 3 passes on defense and ranked 2nd in the NFL with a 13.2 yard punt return avg. He returned two punts for scores in 1994.
Rookie Andre Coleman finished 5th in the NFL with a 26.4 yard kickoff return average and returned two kickoffs during the regular season for TD's. John Carney had an excellent year in 1994 with an 89.5% conversion pct. on field goals and made all 33 extra point attempts. John Kidd struggled on punts early in the season and was replaced by Bryan Wagner, who averaged 41.6 yards per punt (9th in the AFC) and had a net average of 35.3 in 1994.
The Chargers won the AFC West title and got to host a Divisonal Playoff game against Miami. The Chargers' first half of playoff football was not a thing of beauty as they fell behind 21-6. The tide turned in the second half as Reuben Davis sacked Dan Marino for a safety and Natrone Means ran it into the end zone from 24 yards out to put the Chargers within 6 points. The Chargers embarked on a game winning drive capped off with an 8-yard connection from Stan Humphries to Mark Seay with 35 sseconds left in regulation to tie the game and John Carney provided the winning margin with his subsequent extra point to give San Diego the victory. The Chargers wouild travel to Pittsburgh to face the same Steeler team they defeated 2 weeks earlier. The game was a hard fought defensive struggle that like the Miami game wasn't going San Diego's way early. They were trailing 13-3 before Alfred Pupnu caught a 43 yard TD pass from Humphries to get the Chargers within a field goal. Midway through the 4th quarter, Tony Martin caught a pass over the outstretch arms of Pittsburgh's Richard Shelton and took it the distance to give the Chargers a 17-13 lead. The Steelers drove deep into Charger territory late in regulation and the Chargers forced the Steelers into fourth and goal from the Chargers 1 yard line. The Steelers ran Barry Foster and he was stopped by Dennis Gibson just short of the goal line to preserve the victory and the AFC Championship.
The Chargers went to Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami to face the San Francisco 49ers for the World Championship. Once again, the Chargers started slowly as they allowed two TD passes to Ricky Watters, one to Jerry Rice, and one to William Floyd. Only one Charger score was sandwiched in there and that was a Natrone Means 1-yard TD plunge. The Score was 28-10 at the half and this proved to be a bigger hole than the Chargers could climb out of. The 49ers started off the second half with a 9 yard Ricky Watters 9 yard TD run - his third score of the game and a 15 yard hookup from Steve Young to Jerry Rice and the rout was on. The Chargers did counter with a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Andre Coleman, the longest return in Super Bowl history and Stan Humphries and Tony Martin hooked up for a 30 yard TD pass to close the scoring. The Chargers came within 24 points of being Super Bowl Champs as the final score was 49-26, but the Chargers ascended to greater heights in 1994 than anyone except for the Chargers organization expected.
