An UnBillieveable Finish

The 1992 Buffalo Bills for the second straight year had to regroup after losing in the Super Bowl the previous year.  The 1992 season proved to be the most difficult and challenging season since 1989, but the Bills showed their resiliency time and again.  After winning their first four contest of 1992, the Bills hosted Miami and were stunned.  Louis Oliver stole the ball and show as he picked off a Jim Kelly pass and ran it back for 103 yard TD and the Dolphins never looked back in the 37-10 Miami win.  The Bills traveled to L.A. to play the Raiders, a team they defeated all 3 times in the last 2 season, but fell by a 20-3 score.  The Bills, suddenly 4-2 spent their bye week trying to figure how to get the K-Gun offense going again.  They would respond with a 24-20 win against the Jets in the Meadlowlands.  The win proved to be the start of another win streak as they would knock off the Patriots 16-7 to sweep the season series and defeat the Steelers 28-20 at home to set up a rematch down in Miami against the Dolphins.  The Bills proved to be up for the challenge as they won the game 26-20. The Bills avoided a letdown the following week by defeating the Falcons 24-14 at home.  The Bills struggles would return as they went on their second 2 game losing skid with a 16-13 OT loss to Indy and a 24-17 loss at home to the lowly Jets.  The Bills would attempt to end their losing streak against the team they defeated in the AFC Title Game in January and they would be successful in doing so as they beat the Broncos 27-17.  The Week 16 matchup against New Orleans in the Superdome was a struggle, but the Bills pulled out the win by 20-16 score.  The Bills had a chance to win the AFC East with a win at Houston in the season's final week, but the Bills were defeated soundly in the 27-3 loss.  The loss meant that the Bills would have to host a Wild Card game against these same Houston Oilers the following Sunday.

The road to Pasadena would begin on a cloudy 45 degree early January day before 75,141 fans who were stunned to see the Bills completely dissected by the Houston offense in the first half.  Houston's Warren Moon completed 17 of 21 passes for 220 yards and 4 TD's in just the first half to put the Oliers up 28-3 into the halftime intermission.  The second half would begin the same the first half ended.  This time, however, the defense got into the act as Bubba McDowell returned an interception 58 yards for the fifth Oiler touchdown of the day just 1:41 into the half.  Even though Buffalo QB Frank Reich led his Maryland Terrapins back from a 31-0 deficit to beat Miami in his college days, no one thought he could lead the Bills back, even the most supportive of fans who left the stadium in droves.  Reich and the Bills drove down the field and scored on a 1 yard Kenneth Davis plunge to trim the lead to 35-10.  Steve Christie kicked an onside kick that he recovered giving the Bills the ball back.  The Bills turned it into 7 more points as Reich fired a pass down the left sideline, which was caught by Don Beebe and he ran it in for another touchdown.  The lead was down to 18.  The Bills switched from a dime defense to a 3-4, which confused Moon and the Oiler offense.  The Bills continued to come back as Reich completed a 26 yard pass to Andre Reed for a touchdown to make it 35-24. Faced with a 4th down and 5, Reich and Reed hooked up again for a TD, this one came from 18 yards out and the Bills were within 4 points of the Oilers just before the start of the fourth quarter.  The same fans that left the stadium were not allowed to re-enter, but there were so many of them that they resorted to climbing the fences in order to reenter the stadium in the hopes of witnessing history.  With just a shade under 4 minutes remaining in regulation, the Bills took their first lead of the day as Frank Reich found Andre Reed for his third TD of the day.  The 17-yard hookup put the Bills in front by 3 points at 38-35.  Now trailing, the Oilers offense finally awakened would set up Al Del Greco's game-tying FG attempt from 26 yards away with 12 seconds left in regulation.  Del Greco's kick was good to force overtime.  Early in the OT, Moon threw his second interception of the day as Nate Odomes set in front of the pass.  The pick was costly as it set up Steve Christie's 32-yard FG which he drilled to complete the victory simply known as The Comeback.

The remainder of the playoffs for Buffalo seemed almost anticlimatic in comparison to the Houston game.  The Bills traveled to Pittsburgh and defeat the Steelers for the second on the season as Frank Reich passed for 160 yards and 2 TD's while Kenneth Davis, starting his second straight game in place of the injured Thurman Thomas rushed for 106 yards and a score in the 24-3 win in Pittsburgh.  The win would set up the rubber match with the Dolphins.  This time the AFC Championship and a trip to Pasadena for the Super Bowl was at stake.  Quarterback Jim Kelly and Thomas would return to the Buffalo starting lineup, but both were rusty after spending some time on the sidelines.  It was not a problem for Buffalo, however, as the defense held Miami to 33 rushing yards and intercepted Dan Marino twice.  Steve Christie booted 5 field goals and Kelly threw one TD pass to Thomas and Ken Davis ran it in from two yards out for the other Bills TD in the 29-10 win to put the Bills in the Super Bowl for the third straight year.

Unfortunately for the Bills, the Super Bowl appearance netted the same result as the previous two: another loss.  Jim Kelly would get knocked out of the game early, but Frank Reich was not able to pull off another comeback win in relief.  The Buffalo offense uncharacteristcally turned the ball over a Super Bowl record 9 times in the 52-17 rout.  This loss was the worst loss of the three Super Bowls for the Bills to date.

In 1992, defenses throughout the league were more prepared to deal with the Buffalo no huddle K-Gun offensive attack, but the offense still shined for much of the season.  The Bills had the top rushing offense in the NFL led by Thurman Thomas's 1,487 yards and 9 TD's while Kenneth Davis rushed for 613 yards off the bench.  The offense finished second in the NFL with 6,114 yards of total offense.  Jim Kelly continued to play at an All Pro level by completing 269 of 462 passes for 3,457 yards and 23 TD's against 19 int's.  His 81.2 passer rating was fourth in the AFC.  Wide receivers Andre Reed and James Lofton continued to put up solid numbers.  Reed's 65 receptions and 786 yards led the team, while Lofton's 51 and 786, respctively weren't too shabby either.  Thurman Thomas caught 58 passes out of the backfield for 626 yards and 3 TD's.  Don Beebe added 30 receptions for 554 yards.  Pete Metzelaars was the top receiving tight end as Keith McKellar struggled after a long holdout.  Metzelaars added 30 receptions for 298 yards and a share of the team high (along with Lofton) with 6 TD's.  Three Bills offensive linemen made the Pro Bowl: tackles Will Wolford and Howard "House" Ballard along with guard Jim Ritcher.  Kent Hull is another spectacular performer at the center position while guard Glenn Parker beat out John Davis for the starting job.

The Bills got improved play from their defense as defensive end Bruce Smith and nose tackle Jeff Wright returned to the lineup on a full-time basis.  Smith led the team with 14 sacks and Wright added 6.5 while recovering a fumble.  Defensive end Phil Hansen came on to register 6 sacks in the month of December alone.  Outside linebacker Darryl Talley led the team with 77 tackles and added 4 sacks.  Pro Bowl linebacker Cornelius Bennett added 52 tackles, recovered 3 fumbles, and had 4 sacks.  Inside linebacker Shane Conlan added 62 tackles, 2 sacks, and a pick. The Bills were so rich in linebacker talent that Carlton Bailey spent the last part of the season on the bench.  Second year safety Henry Jones emerged as a starter and intercepted a team high 8 passes and returned 2 for scores.  Cornerback Nate Odomes made his first trip to the Pro Bowl after registering 5 interceptions.  Free safety Mark Kelso was also quite the ball hawk in '92 with 7 interceptions of his own.

The Bills special teams improved in '92 with the arrival of Steve Christie from Tampa Bay.  He booted 24 of 30 field goals and Chris Mohr finished 8th in the AFC in punting.  Steve Tasker made the Pro Bowl once again due to his excellence in return coverage.  Clifford Hicks finished 6th in the AFC with 10.0 punt return average.  The Bills continued to struggle in the kickoff return department as Kenneth Davis returned 14 kickoffs for a 17.9 yard average.
