The Journey To Hog Heaven
The Redskins were off and running in 1991. The 'Skins started strong with a 45-0 opening week shutout against Detroit. The Redskins pulled out a hard fought 33-31 victory against archrival Dallas in Texas Stadium the following week. The second shutout in three weeks came against Phoenix, a 34-0 whitewashing. The Redskins visited Cincinnati in week 4 and pulled out a 34-27 victory. Division rival Philadelphia came to town the following week and the Pat Ryan led Philly offense had no chance in the Redskins' 23-0 shutout. The Redskins visited Soldier Field the following week and knocked off Chicago 20-7. The Redskins returned home and were not gracious hosts against the Browns as the Redskins prevailed 42-17. The Redskins entered the bye week at 7-0. The wins kept coming following the bye as the Redskins beat the Giants 17-13 on Sunday night football followed by a 16-13 OT nailbiting win at home against the Oilers. Atlanta arrived in town the following week and were shown the door in short order as the Redskins rolled 56-17. The Redskins traveled to Pittsburgh the following week and prevailed 41-14 giving the 'Skins 11 straight wins to start 1991. All talk about the Redskins going undefeated ended the following week as the Redskins were upset by the upstart Cowboys 24-21 at home. The Redskins righted their ship with three straight wins against the Rams, Phoenix, and the Giants. The Redskins entered Philly with home field in the NFC playoffs clinched so their loss in Philly 23-20 to end the regular season meant little.
The Redskins offense was the highest scoring offense in the NFC and 2nd highest in the NFL. The offensive line, known as "The Hogs", protected immobile QB Mark Rypien by giving him all the time he needed to throw to his receivers downfield and allowed a league best 9 sacks. Left tackle Jim Lachey was named to the Pro Bowl, while center Jeff Bostic, right tackle Joe Jacoby, and first year starting guard Mark Schlereth played at a high level in 1991. Mark Rypien had a career year in '91 as he threw for 3564 yards and 28 TDs. Both totals were highest among NFC passers. His passer rating of 97.8 ranked 2nd in the NFC. "The Posse": Gary Clark, Art Monk, and Ricky Sanders gave Rypien extremely potent and reliable targets. Art Monk caught 71 passes to lead the team for 1049 yards and 8 TD's. Gary Clark led the team with 1340 yards and 10 receiving TD's. He caught 70 balls and Sanders caught 45 passes for 580 yards and 5 TD's. The Redskins also had a three pronged attack on the ground led by Earnest Byner, the NFL's 5th leading rusher with 1,048 yards on the ground. He added 34 reeceptions for 308 yards. Fullback Gerald Riggs was a goal line and short yardage specialist, who led the team with 11 rushing TD's. Rookie halfback Ricky Ervins provided a change of pace with 680 yards rushing and 4.7 yards per carry.
The defense was every bit as good, if not better, than the offense as they allowed the fewest points in the NFL and were 3rd in yards allowed. Many of their starters were Plan B free agent signings and they all provided major contributions. Fred Stokes finished second on the club in sacks, Matt Millen provided leadership and stability at linebacker, Brad Edwards was an effective free safety and Danny Copeland greatly exceeded expectations as he replaced an injured Alvin Walton. Veteran Charles Mann led the team with 11 sacks and recovered a fumble. Linebacker Wilber Marshall had his best season in a Redskin uniform with 5 interceptions and 5.5 sacks. Darrell Green tied Marshall for the team lead with 5 interceptions and his tremendous speed allowed him to be a top-flite cover corner. The special teams unit was truly special, especially the return unit led by Brian Mitchell who had 1,118 combined return yards and returned a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown.
The Redskins earned a bye in the Wildcard round and they would face Atlanta at home in the Divisional Playoff round at home. Against a rainy, muddy backdrop the Redskins would rush for 162 yards and their defense forced 6 Atlanta turnovers in the 24-7 victory. The Redskins would host the Lions in the NFC Championship Game. The Redskins turned two Detroit turnovers into 10 points in the first 5 minutes of the contest, Barry Sanders of Detroit was held to 59 yards, Wilber Marshall sacked Erik Kramer 3 times, and the 'Skins got touchdowns from Gerald Riggs on two occasions, Gary Clark, Art Monk, and Darrell Green on an interception in the 41-10 victory. The win meant the Redskins would play Buffalo in Minneapolis for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XXVI. The Redskins raced to a 24-0 lead deep into the third quarter. The Bills attempted to come back, but fell short in the 37-24 Redskins victory. The win was the third Super Bowl championship in the Joe Gibbs era with each win using a different starting QB - a first in league history.
