Marty Ball Year 2 - Playoffs Here We Come!
The Kansas City Chiefs struggled for much of the 1980's as they had one playoff appearance in 1986 to show for their efforts. Marty Schottenheimer, who led Cleveland to 2 AFC Championship appearances, was brought in prior to the 1989 season to turn things around in Kaycee. After yet another losing season in 1989, coach Schottenheimer started to bring in players who would thrive in his system and things would turn around in 1990.
The Chiefs were spearheaded by a young corps of defenders led by 3rd year defensive end Neil Smith and 2nd year outside linebacker Derrick Thomas. Both were first-round draft choices that could rush the passer. Thomas set an NFL record with 7 sacks of Dave Krieg in a home game against Seattle. Unfortunately, it was in a losing cause. Thomas would lead the NFL with his 20 sacks and Neil Smith sacked the quarterback 9.5 times. Fourth-year nose tackle Dan Saleaumua plugged up the middle and provided help in rushing the passer as he accumulated 7 sacks. The Chiefs had two dependable veteran cornerbacks in Albert Lewis and Kevin Ross, who both appeared in the Pro Bowl.
With the defense playing at such a high level, the offense was not forced to come from behind so the Chiefs were able to run the football often and they had the personnel to do it. Christian Okoye had to carry the load in 1989 and he came through with a 1400+ yard season, but he had help this season. The Chiefs acquired Barry Word in the offseason. He was released by New Orleans after being out of football due to injuries in 1988 and 1989. Word started just 3 games, but still accumulated 1,015 rushing yards to lead the team. Okoye would gain 805 yards and score 7 TD's. Kansas City had a great offensive line featuring Pro Bowler John Alt, David Lutz, Mike Webster, rookie Dave Szott, and Rich Baldinger. Tim Grunhard impressed so much as a rookie that he unseated Webster as the starter at center in midseason.
The highlight of the Chiefs season was garnering a season sweep of their hated rival and eventual division champion Raiders. The Chiefs also knocked off the defending AFC Champion Denver Broncos at home in Week 13. Wins over San Diego and Chicago in the final weeks of the 1990 campaign vaulted the Chiefs into unfamiliar territory - the playoffs. The Chiefs left everything out on the field in Miami. They had a chance to win the game and advance to the Divisional Playoff round but Nick Lowery's FG attempt from 52 yards out fell short with 49 seconds remaining in the contest and it was the Dolphins that advanced to meet with Buffalo.
