All-Pro QB Randall Cunningham (pictured below) ammassed an incredible 4,408 yards from scrimmage, including 942 rushing yards to lead the team in 1990.
Buddy's Last Hurrah
In the first four seasons of Buddy Ryan's tenure as Eagles head man, the Eagles had made steady improvement. They struggled in '86, their regulars finished 7-5 in '87, they finished 10-6 to win the NFC East in '88, and they went 10-6 again in '89. Now the Eagles were not satisfied with garnering double digit victories, they hungered to win in the playoffs, something Philly hadn't done since their Super Bowl season of 1980.
Very few changes were made on the defensive side of the ball, but the same could not be said of the offense. Rich Kotite was installed as the new offensive coordinator, Wide Receiver Cris Carter was released in camp since Buddy Ryan thought that he could only run fade patterns, and three wideouts were drafted and two of them started much of the season: Fred Barnett and Calvin Williams. Another rookie, Heath Sherman made an impact running the ball as the season wore on. Ron Solt was brought in from Indy as his acquisition improved the O-line play.
With all the new offensive personnel, QB Randall Cunningham and the offense sputtered early in the season. The Eagles lost at New York against the Giants to open the season and were flat against Phoenix the following week. Things seemed to improve as the Eagles got their revenge against the Rams in L.A., after the Rams knocked them out of the playoffs at the Vet the previous year, but the Eagles would lose to the Colts to put them at 1-3 heading into the bye week.
The Eagles had two weeks to prepare for RB Herschel Walker and the Vikings and the Eagles rose up to the challenge with a 32-24 Monday Night Football victory. After losing at Washington by a 13-7 score, the Eagles would take flight. The Eagles traveled to Dallas and defeated an improved Cowboys team by 1, dominate at home against New England, and exact revenge on division rival Washington with a 28-14 victory.
The Eagles then went on the road to Atlanta where Heath Sherman carried the offense with a 100+ yard rushing day, which was good enough to win the game by 1. Then, the 10-0 N.Y. Giants came to the Vet, but they would no longer be undefeated as the Eagles proved to be more physical than the Giants on this day. The Eagles won 31-13. Randall Cunningham was involved in the highlight play of the season in Buffalo the following week, when he eluded a safety attempt by Bruce Smith and the heaved a pass off his back foot, 60 yards downfield to Fred Barnett, who caught the ball at midfield and took it to the house for a 95-yard touchdown. It was not enough to propel the Eagles to victory as they lost 23-20 to Buffalo. The Eagles ventured to Miami for a Sunday Night contest the following week and lost a heartbreaker as Pete Stoyanovich kicked the game winning FG in OT. The Eagles would win their final 3 regular season contests with a 31-0 shutout of Green Bay and a 17-3 victory over the Troy Aikmanless Dallas Cowboys at home. The Eagles traveled to Phoenix and avenged their Week 2 loss with a 23-21 victory.
Quarterback Randall Cunningham had his best season in 1990 as he rushed for more yards in a season than any quarterback in league history with 942. He also set a career high with 3,466 yards passing. He would also throw for 30 TD's against 13 interceptions. A couple of organizations, including the Pro Football Writers of America named him the top offensive player in the NFL in 1990. Keith Byars led the team with 81 receptions and 819 rec. yards. Keith Jackson caught 50 balls, Calvin Williams 37, and Barnett had 36 catches. Rookie Heath Sherman emerged as the leading rusher among running backs with 685 yards and a 4.2 yard average. The defense still boasted some fearsome pass rushers. Reggie White led the squad with 14 sacks, while Seth Joyner and Clyde Simmons added 7.5. White and Defensive Tackle Jerome Brown, a terrific run stuffer, represented the Eagles in the Pro Bowl along with Cunningham and Keith Jackson.
For the third straight season the Eagles would not win in the playoffs and for the second straight time, they fell short at home. The Eagles lost this time to division rival Washington as they were unable to stop Earnest Byner from running all over them. The final score was 20-6 and Buddy Ryan would get the axe for failing to get the Eagles over the hump. Rich Kotite was promoted from Off. Coordinator to be the next head coach.
Fullback Keith Byars was a tremendous all-purpose running back who was a fine pass receiver and blocker, who could also carry the ball effectively. He led the Eagles with 81 pass receptions going for 819 yards and 3 TD's in 1990.
Cornerback Eric Allen was one of the top cover corners in the entire NFL. He picked off 3 passes, recovered a fumble, and accumulated 63 tackles in 1990.
